Beaches, Swimming, Surfing

Local beaches - Shelley, town beach (Below Caravan Park), Main Surf beach (Trestle bridge) all within walking distance. Further afield - Powlett River mouth, Cape Patterson & Inverloch, Woolamai and Smiths beach on Phillp Island, all have great surf breaks for varying levels of ability. Surf report

Walks

Local walks along Kilcunda's foreshore at low tide from Shelley Beach to Powlett River mouth, George Bass Coastal Walk - starts opposite the community centre and heads towards San Remo, with magnificent views from the cliffs, Coves and beaches over Bass Strait and towards Cape Woolamai. Bass Coast Rail Trail - You can walk (or ride) East towards Powlett River, Wonthaggi over the famous trestle bridge with great vista's of the ocean, beaches and hills around Killy or head West towards Anderson along the former railway line past the relic's of Kilcunda's Historical Coal mines. Further afield you can always drive to Wilson's Promontory - with its huge choice of walks from Tidal River.

Cycling

Of course the Bass Coast Rail Trail (Anderson to Wonthaggi) 16km can include a side trip to the state Coal mine area. Further a field you have the Great Southern Rail Trail (Leongatha to Foster) 49km or you can try the Grand Ridge Rail Trail (Boolarra to Mirboo North) 13km. Also plenty of Safe and easy family riding in the hills behind Killy such as Woolamai to Grantville - 1.5 hours fantastic scenery with very little traffic. For the more adventurous, a challenging mountain bike ride along the Kilcunda Ridge Road through to Dalyston and beyond - beautiful scenery with a minimum of traffic. Exhilarating long scenic bike rides from Kilcunda through Woolamai, Glen Forbes and Grantville - 45k round trip. Or continue on from Grantville to Coronet Bay before returning to Kilcunda - 60k round trip.

Bass Coast Parks and Reserves

checkout the Basscoats info guide to all the local parks and reserves, fantastic resource. Bunurong Marine Coastal Park between Cape Patterson and Inverloch has views that rival the great ocean road, don't miss stopping at Eagles Nest car-park for a memorable and wonderful trek to the beach.

Scenic drives

Kilcunda Ridge Road, Powlett River, Wonthaggi, Cape Paterson, Inverloch, Tidal River, Wilson's Promontory, Dalyston, Archies Creek to Grantville, Dalyston to Leongatha or Korumburra.

Local Wineries

If it isn't beach weather take a drive and sample some of the local wine and produce List of local wineries might be worth a call before to check cellar door times.

For the Foodie's

a new restaurant and cellar door has opened @ Archies Creek 5mins drive north of Dalyston 15mins from Kilcunda. What you have saved by staying at Killy cottage you can spend on great food @ Archies On The Creek probably pay to book ahead.

Fishing

Whale-watching

If you're brave enough to visit in the winter months keep an eye out to sea for the annual migration of the Southern Right whales.

Woolamai Picnic Races

Take a punt and join in the fun great day out for all the family, usually meeting held mid January - check date here Picnic Races.

Kilcunda Lobster Festival

Killy comes alive with many activities for the whole family usually held end of January - check date here Killy Lobster fest.

San Remo and Phillip Island

San Remo has family beaches and playgrounds, supermarket, hotel, shops, restaurants, bakeries and take-away outlets (enjoy fish & chips on the wharf).
Phillp and Churchill Islands have lots of attractions the Penguin parade, maze, seal rocks, mini golf, koalas, water slide, ten pin bowling, farmers markets, chocolate factory, Grand Prix Circuit and Go Kart track.

Moto GP Phillip Island

The end of October is Moto GP time. Need to book ahead for this event (Kilcunda cottage usually books 12 months in advance) for details checkout Moto GP website or Phillp Island Circuit website lots of things to do all year round @ the circuit, you can do circuit tours, race go-karts, hot laps, as well as the motor racing events most weekends. Super-Bikes are held late February and the V8 Supercars are on mid September. Check the Phillp Island Circuit website for details.

Inverloch, Anderson Inlet

great golf courses, beaches, fine restaurants/cafe's , bakery and is a boating-fishing paradise.

Powlett River

where the river breaks the dunes and meets the surf. Fantastic surf break and family friendly swimming in the estuary. Don't forget your fishing gear, one of the best local fishing spots as well.

Wonthaggi

Wonthaggi (tourist info link) has cinemas, shopping and Pub meals, indoor swimming pool, tennis and squash courts. State Coal Mine - (1871) A visit to the State Coal Mine is a journey back to the difficult working conditions of mining days past.

Korumburra

Coal Creek Heritage Village - outdoor museum of life in South Gippsland between 1870 - 1920

Wilson's Promontory

National Park - approximately a 2hour easy drive 100km away has great beaches, mountains, forests with lots of walks from Tidal River. Well worth the drive down if staying for a week.

Kilcunda township

Kilcunda Township has a fantastic general store/cafe' that does great all day breaky's (on weekends), and "The Killy Pub" - great meals in the bistro with a good selection of local wines on their wine list and the view to die for on the balcony!
